Jenson Brooksby said he simply didn't feel the need to apologize to Fabio Fognini for a net cord. On Monday, Brooksby and Fognini played against each other in the Auckland first round. Down 2-0 early in the third set, Brooksby earned a break point chance to get the break back.

Following a net cord, Brooksby got the break back but didn't really apologize to Fognini. While Brooksby and Fognini were crossing paths at the net, Fognini let Brooksby know that he wasn't impressed with his reaction to a net cord.

In the end, Brooksby defeated Fognini 6-7 (2) 6-1 6-3.

"It's gonna happen in the heat of the battle. He (Fognini) said I should apologize for net cords, but I was taught that it's not really luck-based," Brooksby said of the incident.

After saving a break point, Brooksby earned the first break of the match in the following game to take a 3-2 lead. In the following game, Brooksby saved another break point to go 4-2 up. Brooksby saved break points in the fourth and sixth games but couldn't do the same in the 10th game, when he serving for the first set.

Fognini, who recovered from a break down in the key moments, won the last six points of the first-set tie-break to steal the first set from Brooksby. After losing the first set on a disappointing way, Brooksby bounced back at the start of the second set with back-to-back breaks and a 5-0 lead.

Fognini served out the sixth game to end Brooksby's run of five consecutive games but it didn't change much as the American served out for the second set in the following game. After losing the second set, Fognini started the third set with an early break and a 2-0 lead.

Brooksby responded with breaks in the third, seventh and ninth games as the American ended up completing his comeback win. It was the first-ever meeting between Brooksby and Fognini.
