Lorenzo Musetti reveals if he could change one thing in tennis it would be giving top players an option to select which tournaments they want to participate in. Under the current ATP rules, top players cannot simply be missing out on the biggest events just because they don't feel like playing.
A top-30 player has to play in all four Grand Slams - in eight out of nine Masters tournaments - in at least four ATP 500 events - in at least two ATP 250 tournaments. If a player is injured, he is not mandated to play and won't be penalized for missing the tournament.
"We play more or less the whole year. If you win and if you have a very high ranking, you can decide which tournament to play and have more time to rest, but if you have a medium ranking, you have to play everything. But it’s something everyone does," Musetti told CLAY.
Musetti on what he would be if he didn't become a tennis player
"An actor! I wanted to be an actor. It’s a bit different from being a tennis player, but it has other similar things: an actor carries a lot of pressure, has stressful moments.
In another life maybe!" Musetti revealed. Musetti, 21, plays a one-handed backhand and he used to look up to Roger Federer. Unfortunately for Musetti, he never got a chance to play against Federer and that's something he really regrets.
"Yes, yes, yes, yes, for sure. My dream was to play Federer, but he retired. I played with him in practice, but it’s not the same thing to test yourself and get on the court against a legend like that. I think it’s going to be the same with Nadal, I hope I don’t play him on clay, because it’s going to be difficult, but they are matches you will never forget," Musetti said.
