Boris Becker reveals he was "very emotional" when Novak Djokovic won 2022 Wimbledon but also suggested he was a bit sorry for Nick Kyrgios because he likes what the Australian brings to the table. At 2022 Wimbledon, 28-year-old Kyrgios made his first Grand Slam final.
As a reward, Kyrgios got a chance to play one of the best ever - Djokovic. Kyrgios made a good start to the final but then Djokovic recovered to beat the Australian 4-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 (3) and lift his seventh Wimbledon title.
Unfortunately, Kyrgios hasn't played any tournaments so far in 2023 as the Australian surgically repaired his knee in January.
Becker 'likes' Kyrgios: I want you healthy and with that attitude from 2022
“I was very emotional when he (Djokovic) won.
It was a great statement and he’s a friend so I was happy to see him win. On the other side, I like Nick Kyrgios and what he brings to the competition. So I want him back healthy and I want him back in with the same attitude that he had last year.
Because it’s great for tennis," Becker told The Guardian. Even though Kyrgios was beaten in four sets by Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon final, many agreed that the Australian delivered an absolutely great performance.
But unfortunately for Kyrgios, even his best tennis wasn't enough for him to beat Djokovic. Moments after sealing the 2022 Wimbledon title, Djokovic told Kyrgios he would again be in a Grand Slam final. “Nick, you’ll be back.
Not just at Wimbledon, but in finals. I know it’s tough to find words of consolation after a tough loss like this, but you showed why you deserve to be one of the best players in the world, particularly on this surface.
Congrats to you and your team for an amazing tournament, I wish you all the best," Djokovic told Kyrgios during the on-court trophy presentation.
