Nick Kyrgios said he woke up in a good mood after seeing that his close friend Thanasi Kokkinakis defeated Stan Wawrinka at the French Open. Kyrgios and Wawrinka have a bit of history as Kyrgios told Wawrinka during a 2015 Montreal match that "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate." At the time, Wawrinka was dating fellow tennis pro Donna Vekic.
Australia and France have completely different time zones and Kyrgios couldn't watch the full Kokkinakis and Wawrinka match that lasted nearly five hours.KOKK V STAN 👀👀👀🍿🍿🍿🍿LFG HAHAHAHAHA CMONNNNN…. this is what we live for……. Kyrgios happy Kokkinakis got the win against Wawrinka
Earlier this year, Kokkinakis featured in one of the most memorable matches of the 2023 Australian Open.
After nearly six hours of action, Kokkinakis was outlasted by Andy Murray as the three-time Grand Slam champion edged out the Australian 4-6 6-7 (4) 7-6 (5) 6-3 7-5. At the French Open, Kokkinakis got a chance to play against another Grand Slam champion.
Kokkinakis was again drawn into a five-setter but this time he ended on the winning side as he beat Wawrinka 3-6 7-5 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-3. “The first set and a half he was playing I think the best tennis he can play. I was just trying to hang in there.
I lost a match in a Grand Slam earlier this year against Murray from two sets to love [up], I didn’t want to do it against another legend. Having 40/0 [in the last game], you can imagine the things coming into my mind.
He never went away. It seemed like when he was down, he was playing better tennis, but I just trusted myself and I’m so happy," Kokkinakis said after beating Wawrinka.
