Mats Wilander thought Holger Rune lacked "a little bit of that Nick Kyrgios" in the first two sets of his French Open quarterfinal meeting against Casper Ruud. Going into the match, many thought there would not be much separating Rune and Ruud.

Then, many were left absolutely stunned when Rune came out very flat and Ruud won easily the first two sets 6-1 6-2. Rune bounced back in the third set but had no strength to pull off a comeback win as Ruud won 6-1 6-2 3-6 6-3.

Reflecting on what went for Rune, former seven-time Grand Slam champion Wilander explained that the Dane needed a spark that would get him going.

Wilander: Rune needed a little bit of that Kyrgios

“When you look at how he played and how we behaved, I would agree, 100%.

I don't know if we can ever expect him to be a hundred percent committed professionally, emotionally, physically from the beginning of every match. I just don't think that's his personality. I think he needs mayhem, he needs a little bit of that Nick Kyrgios, and he didn't have that.

He was flat and I think it's a learning lesson for him, but again I don't know if he has the energy to be because he's so fired up in a way - but not with his tennis racquet in his hand," Wilander said in Eurosport's The Cube.

Last year, Rune was also beaten by Ruud in the French Open quarterfinal in four sets. But Rune has improved a lot over the last 12 months and the Dane was given a much bigger chance to beat Ruud this year. Unfortunately for Rune, he failed to deliver his best tennis and his goal of becoming a Grand Slam champion will have to wait for a bit longer. Rune will now turn his focus on the grass season.
