Holger Rune posts injury update amid US Open participation concerns

Holger Rune reveals his back is showing signs of improvement and the Dane expects to be able to practice on Monday. At the Cincinnati Masters, Rune was down by a set and a break to Mackenzie McDonald before retiring due to a back issue.

Previously, Rune withdrew from Umag and also suffered a first-round defeat at the Toronto Masters. Rune undoubtedly didn't feel physically well in Toronto and Cincinnati as it was evident that he was hampered by a back injury.

But the week before the start of the US Open, Rune is expected to start practicing again and the Dane's plan is to compete at Flushing Meadows. "Short update. Small improvements on the back pain. Scan, X-ray, treatment and excellent team work between doctors in New York and Monaco and my team making me sure that I will be ready for practice on Monday.

Grateful for everyone taking action," Rune wrote on X.

Rune seemingly picked up a back injury at the Hopman

Following a Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance, Rune returned to action at the Hopman Cup.

In both of his Hopman Cup singles matches, Rune picked up defeats as he was upset by Leandro Riedi and Richard Gasquet. After the Hopman Cup, Rune was also scheduled to play in Umag but he withdrew from the event. "Unfortunately, I won't be able to play at the Croatia Open this year, as I have issues with my lower back, an injury that prevented me from performing at my usual level this week.

Starting from Monday, I will undergo the necessary treatments and then take some rest. I wish you an excellent tournament in Umag, and I hope to see you next year," Rune said in a statement at the time. The past few weeks haven't been easy for Rune but he remains hopeful that he will be able to compete and do well at the US Open.
