Former Australian Davis Cup team captain Wally Masur believes a healthy and motivated Nick Kyrgios could be a Grand Slam contender in 2024. Kyrgios, 28, enjoyed his career-best season last year when he made his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon before losing to Novak Djokovic.

Also last year, Kyrgios had several wins over top players and proved that he was capable of beating the very best. But after a great 2022 season, Kyrgios sustained a knee injury in the offseason and then also picked up a wrist injury after playing his first tournament of the year in June.

Kyrgios will finish the 2023 season with just one tournament played this year but he is working on returning to tennis at the start of the 2024 season.

Masur on Kyrgios' comeback and Grand Slam chances

"I honestly don't know (what his plans are).

I've heard that he's been training and doing rehab in Canberra. Roger [Federer] has retired, Rafa [Nadal] is a little busted and Andy [Murray] is playing with one hip, so the big four have been pretty much dismantled, although Novak [Djokovic] is obviously still there, so there are opportunities [for Kyrgios to come back and win big events].

I thought it might have been the next group of Taylor Fritz and Stefanos Tsitsipas, but Carlos Alcaraz has been the one who has busted through and emerged. Can Nick come back and play a part in all this? Absolutely, because anyone who serves like he does is always competitive.

He might even have the best serve in the game right now. Can he do it? Yes, but it probably comes down to motivation and making sure his body doesn't let him down. He's pretty crucial for Australian and world tennis, so it would be good to have him back," Masur told Australian media.

In August, Kyrgios told his concerned fanbase that he was still motivated to do great things in tennis. After missing basically the entire 2023 season, it will be interesting to see how Kyrgios does in his return to tennis next year.
