Tsitsipas earned $75,000 for three games played at the ATP Finals against Rune

Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after just fifteen minutes of play against Holger Rune, putting an end to his path at the ATP Finals 2023. The Greek champion lasted only three games before making a decision that generated some criticism.

Many people present in the crowd on the stands of the PalaAlpitour did not like the choice of the 25-year-old finalist at the 2023 Australian Open. Ticket holders criticized Tsitsipas for taking to the court only to be able to earn the money guaranteed from each game played.

Stefanos earned $25,000 per game played, for a total of $75,000 for the three games during which he managed to remain on the court. In total, Tsitsipas leaves Turin with $244,000 earned in an entire match (played against Jannik Sinner - ed.) and for the three games played against Rune.

The crowd present booed the young Greek, who also received criticism from some users on social media, especially on X.

Tsitsipas tried to explain the reasons for his withdrawal

In the press conference, Tsitsipas tried to clarify the reasons for his withdrawal, explaining: "Hello everyone.

I apologize to all the fans and the crowd who came to support me and watch the match today. I'm really sorry that I wasn't able to finish the match. It was also a shame not to give space to another tennis player. The doctors, after all the visits I have undergone in recent days, suggested I play.

They gave me the green light to give it a try. Unfortunately, I felt very bad on the court. I did everything I could to be ready for this match, but it didn't work. I hate retiring during a match, I'm not that kind of person. It devastates me that I won't be able to finish this tournament.

I've been training for the last few days, even though I haven't spent much time on the court. I had a little trouble during some movements. For me it is important to be fit and feel good about my back. The pain was very strong.

I've felt pain during matches in the past and put up with it, but this was clearly too much to handle. I had to make a difficult decision. During the warm up I felt intense pain while serving. At that moment I probably realized that I wouldn't be able to go through with it."
