Daniil Medvedev is full of optimism regarding his collaboration with "smart" Gilles Simon as the Russian tennis star believes the retired French star can help him improve some aspects of his game that are not the best.

This week, the news came out that Medvedev, 28, added 39-year-old Simon - who retired from pro tennis after the 2022 season - to his team. Initially, many found the news as interesting but also funny, considering that Medvedev's style has often been compared to Simon's.

Medvedev, ranked at No. 4 in the world, confirmed the news to Tennis Majors and highlighted he hopes this is just the start of a long-term partnership. Also, the report revealed that Medvedev and former world No. 6 Simon met after the Australian Open and decided to officially announce a partnership after a successful trial period. Their first official tournament will come in Dubai next week.

When it comes to Medvedev's long-time coach Gilles Cervara, nothing changes there as Cervara will remain the biggest part of the Russian's coaching staff.

Medvedev on hiring Simon

“We see how it goes. So far it has been going good. Hopefully it is for a very long time but that depends on a lot of factors. We will see how much time he spends," Medvedev told Tennis Majors.

"For sure Gilles Cervara will be more time with me than Gilles Simon. That is how it works because that is how it was. We will see what the future brings as to how many weeks he will be with us.

“My expectations are that Gilles Simon is a very smart player that can help me improve my game – especially hoping to improve parts of my game that are maybe not the best. So far it’s been going good.”

Even though Simon was in decline in his last several seasons on the Tour, he still managed to beat Medvedev three times in their four meetings. After losing to Simon in their first three meetings, Medvedev finally clinched his first win over Simon on the grass courts of 's-Hertogenbosch in 2022 after sealing a 7-5 6-4 win.

Now, Simon is retired and having his first coaching job on the Tour with Medvedev.
