12 days ago Matteo Berrettini announced his forfeit from the 2024 Roland Garros through his social channels, “Although I am training intensively, I still don't feel ready to play more matches at best of 5 sets. That is why I have decided, with my team, to return for the season on grass.

Thank you, as always, for the continued support. We just need to have a little more patience”. wrote the Roman tennis player. Yesterday, the former Wimbledon finalist finally delivered the news all his fans had been waiting for.

He will return to grass, a surface that has given him the best satisfaction in his career: “It's not the season I wanted on clay. But I feel confident and positive about the season on grass,” he said on social media.

There is therefore reason to be optimistic for his prompt return, presumably already from the Queen's tournament, where he triumphed twice, in 2021 and 2022.

Matteo Berrettini will then try to return to the main draw of the London Open. Berrettini will try to redeem a season that has so far been bitter in satisfactions for him, mainly due to physical ailments. After returning with a victory on the clay of Marrakech, Matteo immediately gave in in the following 1000 in Monte-Carlo and had to withdraw from the following tournaments due to severe tonsillitis.

The Italian, who in the meantime has fallen to 97th place in the ranking, preferred not to rush things, avoiding any risk of having to return to the pits again. A phase of the season that is very dear to him will begin in mid-June and that he absolutely does not want to miss for any reason in the world.

Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini is going through a rather peculiar period. In the last twelve months, the Italian has played very little, constantly struggling with physical problems and has missed, among other things, the Internazionali d'Italia in Rome and the French Open.
