Just as happened to Roger Federer and Jannik Sinner - his main role models – young star Joao Fonseca won his first match on the major circuit at the age of 17.

Fonseca also shares a birth month with the Swiss legend and the South Tyrolean: all three were born in August. The 2006-born player has already put himself on the map in the latter part of 2023, when he won the U.S. Open Junior and became the first Brazilian to be named ITF World Champion by finishing on top of the category ranking.

Fonseca took part in the Nitto ATP FInals 2023 as a sparring partner and was called by several experts "the little Sinner" because of the strength of his strokes. An explosiveness that emerged precisely during the Rio de Janeiro tournament.

Joao Fonseca is a young star

Joao Fonseca received a wildcard to play in the ATP Halle 2024. The young Brazilian will play in the German ATP 500, which takes place from June 17 to 23, just two weeks before Wimbledon. The 17-year-old could meet other players at the event, such as Jannik Sinner, for example.

Fonseca spoke to Uol about his first steps in the world of tennis. "I've been playing tennis since I was 4 years old because I went to watch my brother, who is five years older than me, train.

I didn't think I could fall in love with tennis so much, I've always been very attached to the sport: I tried playing football, volleyball and I went surfing. Until 2022 I didn't think I could dedicate myself to tennis, honestly.

It was only when I won a match in a Challenger tournament, beating some top 200 and 300 players, that I understood I had something to offer", Fonseca explained before revealing his dream. "My big dream is to be number 1 in the world and win a Slam.

Wimbledon is my favorite Major. The road is long and requires work. I keep my feet on the ground because that's how dreams come true. But if you don't believe in yourself, who will do it for you?" .

Referring to his idols, Fonseca finally revealed: "When I was little, I never missed a single Federer match. My mother is a big Roger fan. Now I like to watch Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz's matches.”
