Tennis: The last year's finalist and the fifth seed Ivo Karlovic, Australian No.2 Bernard Tomic and the American qualifiers Ryan Harris and Austin Krajicek are through to the second round of the Memphis Open. World No.25 Ivo Karlovic, who had lost to the defending champion Kei Nishikori in last year's final, won the first set in a close tie-break (9-7) against Lukas Lacko but needed only one break to win the second set 6-3 and went through to the next round in 1 hour and 23 minutes.
Karlovic served 23 aces in the match. Tomic, who reached the fourth round of the Australian Open a fortnight ago, came back from one set down to beat Igor Sijsling in 3 sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Tomic had lost in the first round in his only previous appearance here.
American qualifer Austin Krajicek saved two match points as he edged Mikhail Kukushkin in 3 sets 6-2, 6-7(3), 7-6(8) in two hours and 36 minutes. He will face Karlovic next. Another American qualifer Ryan Harris defeated Malek Jaziri in two tie-breaks 7-6(3), 7-6(1) and will face the top seed Kei Nishikori next.
