Guillermo Garcia-Lopez gets past Gael Monfils: Sets finals clash with Jiri Vesely in Bucharest

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez came from a set down against Frenchman Gael Monfils to setup a final clash with Jiri Vesely in the final of the Bucharest Open on Sunday. This will be the first time both these players will go up head to head against each other on the ATP World Tour while Garcia-Lopez holds a 2-1 advantage from the FedEX ATP events.

Garcia-Lopez did not make it easy on himself as he was able to capitalize only on 4 of the 14 break-point opportunities that came his way against Monfils – eventually prevailing in three sets 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 in order to qualify for his 8th ATP Final on tour.

However defeating the Frenchman for the first time in his career was an exciting turn of events for the 30 year old Spaniard. “It is the first time that I beat Gael [Monfils] on clay, so I am happy,” Garcia-Lopez said.

“It is difficult for me to play against him on clay because he does a lot of running, he defends well… but my game was good enough today to beat him. “Even if it was a very tough and physical match, I knew I had to play until the end and fight. I’m happy to be back in the final here and I hope I will recover well for tomorrow.”
