Since his sensational run to the final of the Sao Paulo Open in February, Italian world number 117 Luca Vanni has experienced four consecutive tournament first round exits. Earlier on this week he finally ended his losing streak by qualifying for the main draw of the Madrid Masters.
The 29-year-old was also able to continue his winning streak into the main draw yesterday following a shock three sets win over Bernard Tomic.
During the late night encounter, Vanni battled to a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1), victory in just under two hours to give him his first ever Masters main draw victory.
Following his milestone win, Tennis World spoke to him about the match and how it feels to win.
The visibly delighted Italian said that he was “really happy” with the win and gave his own assessment of the match.
“I feel good, I started the match with a little bit of tension because his (Tomic) game was slow, flatter and it changed a lot.
Then after the first set I started to serve better and not make so many mistakes”.
“After the last game of the second set I started to serve unbelievable with a first serve of 80% or 85%”. In the next round Vanni plays fellow countryman Simone Bolelli for the second time this year. During their first encounter at the Marseille Open, Bolelli took the win in straight sets.
