Colombia's top tennis player Santiago Giraldo has enlisted the help of former world No.2 Alex Corretja. Giraldo is currently ranked 62nd in the world and is yet to reach a final in 2015. His last final appearance was at the Barcelona Open in April 2014.
His current relationship with main coach, Felipe Beron, remains unchanged. It is understood that Corretja has been hired as a consultant to the Colombian. Following the announcement, Giraldo told Colombian media that'he was positive about the prospect of working with the Spaniard.
"I am grateful and motivated by this new stage,". He said.
"I have every faith that, with his experience and advice and work together, we will produce very positive things," The Colombian's main coach has also expressed his delight with the appointment by tweeting that he was ‘proud to work with this great professional”.
Giraldo is not the first player that Corretja has worked with.
Between 2008-2011, the 41-year-old worked with Andy Murray. During the three year period the British No.1 described Corretja as ‘a friend as well as a mentor'. So far in 2015 Giraldo has reached the semi-final in two ATP 250 tournaments (Sao Paulo and Geneva).
He has also produced one win over a top 10 player which was against Marin Cilic in the quarter-final of the Geneva Open in Switzerland. His main draw win-loss for this year is currently 21-23 (48% winning rate).
