Controversy-stricken Nick Kyrgios has been handed the maximum fine by the ATP following his controversial comments made against Stan Wawrinka. The ATP have confirmed that the 20-year-old will be fined the maximum amount, which is $10,000.
During his confrontational match against Stan Wawrinka, the 20-year-old made a comment about Wawrinka’s girlfriends which was picked up by a microphone. The comments resulted in a fierce response by the Swiss after the match.
In the brief statement the ATP spokesman has also stated that further action could potentially be taken against the Australian. “The ATP also said that it is still reviewing that matter and additional penalties may be forthcoming”.
The ATP provided no indication about what these potential penalties could be. Following the backlash, Kyrgios has posted a public apology on his Facebook account. He said that he has also issued a private apology to Wawrinka.
