Serbian world number 414 in the world Janko Tipsarevic earned straight sets win over Nicolas Almagro, 46th-ranked, on the first day of The Boodles grass exhibition. The 31-year-old recorded a 6-2 7-6 win over a former ninth player in the world, and for the fourth year in a row won at least one match at the Stoke Park where the event is held.

2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro also got off to a great start as he handed a defeat to promising Borna Coric in Croatian's first appearance. Del Potro, 27, collected a 6-2 6-3 win over the 19-year-old and for the first time since 2011 he tasted the smell of the singles victory at The Boodles tournament.

Best-ranked Italian player Fabio Fognini managed to recover after a 15 minute first set bagel suffered from the side of big serving John Isner and to end up as an outright winner. The holder of three ATP titles gained his first singles victory at the exhibition in his sixth attempt after he beat American Isner in a 3-setter, 0-6 6-2 10-5.

In the last encounter of the day, Viktor Troicki, 30, successfully went through against 29-year-old Jeremy Chardy challenge in two set battle, 7-5 6-4. Serbian No 2 now heads off positively to his Wednesday's match against another Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
