ATP Sydney: Marcel Granollers and Gilles Muller avoid upsets, Martin Klizan retires

It was a good round-up of first round matches in the ATP section of the Sydney Open. Nine singles matches were played, of which three had seeded players. The eighth seed Marcel Granollers and the sixth seed reached the second round, but the seventh seed Martin Klizan had to retire mid-match in the third set of his match.

The following is the recap of the day’s action: Marcel Granollers defeated lucky loser Santiago Giraldo in three sets 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 and it was by the same sets’ margin that Gilles Muller defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The Luxembourg player won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the second round. 17-year-old Australian wild card Alex de Minaur defeated Benoit Paire in straight sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to become the youngest match winner after Canada’s Denis Shapovalov did so in the Rogers Cup in 2016.

De Minaur’s countryman and another wild card recipient, Jordan Thompson defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5, 6-2 to reach the second round. Mischa Zverev defeated Nicolas Almagro in straight sets too 6-4, 6-2. Russian Andrey Kuznetsov lead 2-6, 6-1, 3-0 in his match against Martin Klizan when the Slovak stopped play.
