Italian tennis star Fabio Fognini has withdrawn from next week's Rolex Shanghai Masters. The world No. 13 is dealing with an ankle problem. Fognini is having a strong week at this week's China Open in Beijing. The 31-year-old has reached his second-ever semi-final in Beijing.
Despite the ankle problem, Fognini is still planning to play his semi-final match against No. 1 seed Juan Martin del Potro. The Italian is bidding to win his maiden Beijing title in his ninth appearance at the tournament.
The 31-year-old recently beat del Potro in the Los Cabos final.
Fognini has played in Shanghai eight times so far in his career.
Fognini withdraws from Shanghai with an ankle problem. Still expecting to play Beijing SFs tomorrow vs Del Potro, but his (slim) London chances are now pretty much over.
Still got a chance to go as an alternate. — José Morgado (@josemorgado) October 5, 2018
The Italian debuted at the Chinese Masters 1000 event in 2009. The 31-year-old missed the Shanghai event in 2010 as his run of seven consecutive Shanghai appearances is set to come to an end. Fognini has yet to make a deep run in Shanghai as he has never made it past the round-of-16 at the tournament.
The Italian was beaten by Serb Novak Djokovic in the 2013 Shanghai round-of-16 and by world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in last year's Shanghai round-of-16 respectively. Australian Matt Ebden won't have to play the Shanghai qualifying event as he will replace Fognini in the main draw.
Ebden, 30, was drawn to meet Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the Shanghai qualifying first round.
