Belgian tennis star David Goffin will kick off his 2019 season at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha, per Belgian tennis journalist Yves Simon. The 27-year-old has made only one Doha appearance so far in his career. Goffin, ranked at No.
11 in the world, debuted at the Doha event this season -- when he beat Dutch Robin Haase in the first round, before losing to Spain's Fernando Verdasco in the round-of-16. The Doha event will be the Belgian's first tour event when he returns from an injury.
2017 Nitto ATP Finals runner-up Goffin announced last week that he was shutting down his 2018 campaign due to an elbow injury. The 27-year-old last played at the Shenzhen Open -- where he lost in his opening match at the tournament to three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray.
The Belgian underlined that he would need at least a month to recover from his injury. Goffin's coach Thierry Van Cleemput wants to take advantage of the forced break and to put on a big off-season with the Belgian.
Goffin, a four-time ATP champion, disappointingly hasn't won any titles this year after a breakthrough 2017 campaign. Coach Cleemput also underlined that they will aim high in the 2019 season.
