Cilic and Gulbis fall in early Day 1 action

19 seed Marin Cilic wasted no time in continuing to disappoint his supporters, losing to 33 year old Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo (pictured) in the opening round today. Cilic served for the first set twice before eventually losing it in a tiebreak and proceeded to destruct 4-6 4-6 in the next two sets.

It has been a long fall for Cilic, from a possible top contender at the Australian Open in 2010 making the semis to now losing first round at the French in straights. Also in the talented disappointment room is Ernests Gulbis.

Gulbis, who beat Federer on clay last year and pushed Nadal 3 sets in 2010 lost today even worse than Cilic. Gulbis lost 6-1 6-4 6-2 to Blaz Kavcic, not a well known player to say the least. Kavcic served well and was consistent while allowing Gulbis to hit error after error.

Gulbis has now lost 21 straight sets in slams. 55 errors from Gulbis in 25 games. A wretched performance. Other results today: (7) David Ferrer def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-3 6-3 6-1
