ATP Roland Garros- Federer defeats Monfils, sets up Djokovic showdown

It was a quality first set, with Roger edging it 6-4. Fed continued his winning ways, going up an early break 3-0. Monfils' body language was poor, but he still was able to dig in and break back for 2-3. Monfils then played a dodgy game at 2-3 after breaking back.

He was up 40-15, missed an overhead into net at 40-30, and double faulted the game away before smashing his racquet into the ground. After Federer held easily for 5-2, Monfils called the trainer. Heavy winds really kicked up the clay late in the 2nd set, but Federer converted on his 3rd set point to take the second set 6-3.

Federer dealt with the wind easily early in the third and broke Monfils in the first game. Roger loosened up and really began to toy with Monfils at this point. Federer appeared to relax a bit and Monfils regained his concentration to hold and break back for 2 all.

On serve they went, Monfils saved 3 break points at 4 all and survived a marathon game to hold for 5-4. At 5-5, Monfils crushed a forehand right onto the line to save a break point, and then Federer flubbed a drop shot wide to miss another break point.

Monfils smacked an ace to finally hold for 6-5. At 5-6, Federer served at 15-30, 2 points away from the set for Monfils, but Federer jerked him around the next few points, hit a forehand winner down the line, and cruised in the tiebreaker.

Monfils appeared to slightly pull his groin at one point in the 5-6 game which may have contributed to the one sided tiebreaker. Federer will now play Djokovic in the semifinals. Final score: 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3)
