World no. 12 and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro had made Los Cabos debut last August, losing in the title match to Fabio Fognini. The organizers have already announced a strong field for 2019 edition, with Fabio Fognini set to defend the crown against Grigor Dimitrov, Feliciano Lopez and Diego Schwartzman.
On Tuesday, they have also stated Juan Martin will play Los Cabos for the second year in a row, hoping to go one step further and claim the title in front of the Mexican fans. Struggling with a knee injury between October and May, the Argentine had to skip the ATP Finals, Australian Open and the first three Masters 1000 events in 2019, playing only in Delray Beach and staying sidelined until Madrid after feeling the pain again.
In Rome, Juan Martin wasted two match points versus world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second set tie break and had to end his Roland Garros campaign in the fourth round, losing the points he claimed a year ago and dropping out from the top-10 since January 2018.
“It’s great news for us that Juan Martin del Potro has decided to return to Los Cabos,” said Josee Antonio Fernandez, director of the Abierto Los Cabos. “We have a great relationship with him and his team, and we know they were very grateful for the entire experience we offered them last year.
Tennis is a sport capable of offering immediate rematches – now we are facing the possibility del Potro and Fognini will meet again in Los Cabos. However, we are sure that this year’s competition will be a lot tighter, especially considering the names that have already confirmed and those that we will announce in the coming days”.
