Rising star Matteo Berrettini withdraws late from Montreal Masters

Rising Italian star Matteo Berrettini has delayed his Rogers Cup debut as he has withdrawn late from the Montreal Masters due to an ankle injury. Berrettini, ranked at No. 26 in the world, had been drawn to meet qualifier Feliciano Lopez in his Montreal opener on Tuesday.

Instead, it will be Australian lucky loser John Millman who will be facing former world No. 12 Lopez in the Montreal first round. Meanwhile, Berrettini has yet to play since Wimbledon as he has now picked up back-to-back tournament withdrawals.

Previously, the Italian pulled out of Gstaad and didn't defend his title at the Swiss event. Berrettini had a big grass season as he won his grass title in Stuttgart before making the Halle semifinal a week later. Also, the Italian had a solid campaign at The Championships as he made the round-of-16 before losing to record eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer.

It remains to be seen will Berrettini be ready to return to action next week at the Cincinnati Masters. Former world No. 20 Berrettini has no previous appearances on the hard courts of Cincinnati.
