Swiss tennis player Henri Laaksonen, 27, has received the second Basel wildcard. Laaksonen, ranked at No. 103 in the world, is set to make his seventh main draw appearance in Basel. The Swiss debuted at the Basel event in 2012, when he picked up a first round loss against the now retired Paul Henri Mathieu.
Laaksonen picked up five consecutive first round exits in Basel, before he won his opener at the tournament last year. The 27-year-old's lone win in Basel came against 2018 French Open semifinalist Marco Cecchinato. After a surprise win over Cecchinato, the Swiss was beaten by rising American star Taylor Fritz in the round-of-16.
Laaksonen also has one appearance in the Basel qualifying as he tried to make the 2014 main draw through the qualifying event. Back then, the Swiss failed to clinch a main draw spot after losing to Dutch Robin Haase in his qualifying opener.
It remains to be seen can Laaksonen make it a step further in Basel this year. The first Basel wildcard went to rising Australian star Alex de Minaur.
