French tennis star Gael Monfils, 33, has withdrawn from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship due to an injury, the tournament announced via its Twitter account. The 33-year-old had been expected to appear at the Abu Dhabi exhibition for the first time since 2012 and play back-to-back exhibition events ahead of the new season.
Last week, the Frenchman was one of the eight players that participated at the inaugural Diriyah Tennis Cup, which was held on the outskirts of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. World No. 10 Monfils achieved a solid result in Riyadh as he beat three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the Diriyah Cup quarterfinal, before losing to Italy's Fabio Fognini in the semifinal.
Unfortunately for Monfils, this week he was forced to join world No. 5 Daniil Medvedev on the Mubadala World Tennis Championship player withdrawal list. The replacement for former world No. 6 Monfils was found in rising Russian star Andrey Rublev, who will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas on December 19.
