Despite the rumors of uncertainty that circulated earlier this month, Fabio Fognini will lead the Italian selection at the inaugural edition of the ATP Cup starting on January 3. “Fabio Fognini's presence in Perth for the first edition of the ATP Cup is 100% confirmed,” communicated Italian journalist Luca Fiorino, affirming that the source of the news was Fognini himself.
The 32-year-old’s participation was questioned due to the birth of his second child, which might have happened sometime during the competition. However, Farah Fognini was born on December 23, and the World No. 12 will hence travel to Australia to play the first phase of the ATP Cup.
Since Matteo Berrettini—original first racquet of the selection—has withdrawn from the competition due to an abdominal injury, Fognini will take the reins of the green-white-red flag team and hopefully guide them to the first place of the Group D to snatch their pass to Sydney.
