Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the Australian Open, Goran Ivanisevic and Marcos Baghdatis explained which young player they think will win a Grand Slam first. They stated that even if Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer are the favorites for the biggest tournaments, a Next Gen player can produce a surprise in 2020 and win a Major.
Ivanisevic a former Wimbledon Champion, who is currently coaching Novak Djokovic, praised Daniil Medvedev: "He's the closest out of these youngsters to win a Grand Slam."
The former World No. 2 added: "I like Tsitsipas the most, he's my favourite player but I think that Medvedev proved in 2019 that he's dangerous.
He's dangerous, he's is ready and 2020 will be a big year."
On the other hand, Baghdatis, who reached the 8th spot of the ATP Singles Ranking, sees Stefanos Tsitsipas more likely to win a Major: "I think Stef can.
It will be a surprise to me but I think he is ready. It's not that I don't see him winning one. If he doesn't win one, I don't want him to put pressure on himself. A Grand Slam will come when he is ready”.
"The ATP Finals is not the same tournament as a Grand Slam. People confuse the ATP Finals and a Grand Slam. The pressure of winning a Grand Slam is a different story because you have a day in between matches so your mind is working.
It's a completely different tournament. I think one day it will happen and he will win more than one major," the Cypriot concluded.
