Tennis - American Bethanie Mattek-Sands is through to the final of the women’s doubles at the Australian Open with Czech partner Lucie Safarova and will meet the Asian duo of Yung-Jan Chan of Taipei and Jie Zheng, of China, in the final.
Mathek-Sands and Safarova, playing together for the first time, advanced to the final when their opponents - Germans Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld – retired after losing the first set to love due to Goerges suffering an illness.
Goerges and Groenefeld had upset the top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the third round earlier. In the other semi-final, Chan/ Zheng, the 14th seeds, beat the 13th seeds Michaella Krajicek and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3 6-2 victory.
Both Mattek-Sands and Safarova will be playing in their first Grand Slam doubles final, while Chan and Zheng will be playing in their third Grand Slam doubles final. Of the four players, only Zheng has won a Grand Slam doubles title before, having won the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2006.
