Big serving American Reilly Opelka says his best results come when his mind is not preoccupied with tennis, in an interview with Newsday. Opelka won his first ATP title in New York earlier this year and says playing in New York helps his game as the city has a lot of things to offer.
The 22-year-old says, “I love New York. The New York Open goes on during New York Fashion Week, so I was in the city every night. I was in a good place mentally. I was happy and pretty laid back”. The 36th ranked Opelka says he loves fashion, which is one of the main reasons he loves playing in the Grand Slams, especially at the US Open in New York.
"I’m a big consumer when it comes to fashion." At 6 feet 11 inches tall, Opelka is one of the tallest players on the ATP Tour, along with Croatian Ivo Karlovic and is a former junior Wimbledon champion as well, winning the 2015 Wimbledon junior event beating Taylor Fritz and Mikael Ymer in the final.
He also reached the boys doubles final with Akira Santillan at the same event. In October this year, he hit his 1,000th ace of the season - and finished as No. 2 on the list for a total number of aces hit during the season behind countryman John Isner, who has hit 1.048 aces this year.
Isner has now finished the season with most aces for the seventh time. Opelka was part of a Meet-N-Greet with fans at Park Ave Tennis on Friday.
