Former world No. 1 Andy Murray admitted his timing was off against Tommy Paul and he was fishing himself on the back foot in most rallies.. Murray, who received a wild card into the Stockholm Open, lost to Paul in the quarterfinal.

Paul entered the match as the underdog but delivered a good performance to beat Murray 6-2 3-6 6-3 and reach his first ATP semifinal of the season. "I didn’t hit the ball particularly well so I was on the back foot in most of the rallies.

I was just battling, the timing was off from the back of the court a little bit but that’s the first time since February where I played three consecutive days," Murray said, per Tennis Up To Date.

Murray confident he will be better in 2022

Murray has been experiencing mostly early exits at the tournaments this season..

Murray, now ranked at No. 143 in the world, received a total of 14 wild cards this season. Murray, 34, isn't ready to call it a career yet despite two major hip surgeries and struggling to play on the level he would like to.play.

“My game will improve, I think, over the off-season – I’m pretty clear on the things that I need to work on. I need to make sure we get a good plan in place that come the beginning of January those improvements have been made," Murray added.

Murray had a trial with coach Esteban Carril in Stockholm this week and it remains be seen if he will add the former Johanna Konta coach to his team for the 2022 season. "It’s another person with a fresh set of eyes and with a good reputation and good experience.

That’s why I wanted to try it out and see how it goes,” Murray said earlier this week. “These last few years have been tough for me and my team. I think having a little bit of space and distance is important”.
