This year’s nominees for the Newcombe medal comprise of some of the most renowned names in Australian tennis. Among the nominees are World No 21, Sam Stosur and World No 25, Daria Gavrilova – two of Australia’s finest tennis players – both of whom had outstanding seasons.
But however, speaking about their nomination, both of them have voiced the opinion that wheelchair tennis player, Dylan Alcott is the likely favorite in their opinion. They firmly believe that the two-time Paralympic gold medalist will be making history by becoming the first disabled athlete to win the Newcombe medal.
"Dylan is obviously the stand-out with his two gold medals and what he's been able to achieve this year on top of many years. You'd have to say he's the No.1 contender," Stosur said Gavrilova had this to say about the nomination.
"I think Dylan should win it," Gavrilova said. "He's a good friend of mine and I love to hang out with him. He's a pretty cool guy. He deserves it." Alcott had a wonderful year of 2016. Apart from winning both in the singles category and the quad doubles at the Rio Games, he was also able to defend his Australian Open crown at the start of the year.
