Tennis - 26-year-old Australian tennis player Steven de Waard came to Vancouver to play the Odlum Brown Van Open but ended up in the emergency room instead. de Waard played in the doubles event and was seeded third alongside countryman Marc Polmans and the duo reached the quarter-finals before going down to JC Aragone and Ryan Shane.
However, de Waard had to go to the hospital in order to get his appendix out and posted a picture of him from his hospital bed on his Twitter feed. He is ranked No. 129 in the world in doubles and No. 915 in singles.
