Nick Kyrgios pulls out of Indian Wells

Rising star Nick Kyrgios has pulled out of the Indian Wells Masters. The 22-year-old remains bothered by an elbow injury. Kyrgios has now picked up his fourth in a row withdrawal. The Australian hasn't played since the early February and Davis Cup round one.

The world No. 20 pulled out of Delray Beach, Rotterdam and Acapulco prior to Indian Wells. Kyrgios, seeded at No. 17, arrived in the desert early. He was expected to open his campaign in round two against Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Kyrgios reached the Indian Wells quarter-finals last year and then pulled out from the event due to food poisoning. "Absolutely gutted to withdraw today as Indian Wells is one of my favourite tournaments but my elbow is just not ready.

I gave it as long as possible but I’m not at the level to compete yet," Kyrgios wrote on Twitter. World No. 108 Matteo Berretini is set to replace Kyrgios in the main draw as a lucky loser. The Italian lost in the Indian Wells qualifying final round but he is now set to make his main draw debut in the desert.
