Rising Australian star Jordan Thompson expects No. 24 seed Matteo Berrettini to come up firing when they meet in the US Open second round. Thompson, ranked at No. 55 in the world, got off to a good start at Flushing Meadows as he saw off former world No.
28 Joao Sousa 6-3 6-2 6-4 in his opener. Meanwhile, Italy's Berrettini overcame former top-10 player Richard Gasquet in four sets to claim his maiden win on the hard courts of the US Open. Berrettini, 23, is enjoying a breakthrough season on the tour as he has made three finals this year and also broke in the top-20 for the first time in his career.
"He's a big guy - big frame, good ball striker. Hits it big," Thompson said of Berrettini after beating Sousa, as revealed on the AAP. "He's got a really good serve so he's probably going to throw everything at me. I've got to be prepared to make a lot of balls."
