Rising Australian star Alexei Popyrin is confident in his game as he is looking forward to meeting No. 4 seed Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open third round. Popyrin, ranked at No. 96 in the world, delivered a big performance on Thursday as he saw off fellow rising star Jaume Munar 6-2 7-6 (5) 6-2 to set up a Medvedev clash.
Popyrin, 20, and 23-year-old Medvedev will be meeting for the second time in their respective careers when they clash at Melbourne Park. Six months ago, the Russian won the lone meeting between the two when he handed a 6-7 (6) 6-1 6-4 6-4 loss to the Australian in the Wimbledon second round.
"I haven’t been broken yet this tournament so that’s a good thing for me,” Popyrin underlined after beating Munar, per the AAP. “I think I’m a better player now than I was at Wimbledon,” said Popyrin “He (Medvedev) is one of the best players in the world. It’s going to be a great challenge for me. I’m really looking forward to it”.
