Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios loves playing at Melbourne Park and he gave credit to the fans after overcoming a tough Gilles Simon challenge. Kyrgios, the top-ranked Australian at this year's Australian Open, defeated the Frenchman 6-2 6-4 4-6 7-5 to reach the third round at Melbourne Park.
Kyrgios appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable straight-set win but Simon recovered from a break down in the third set to force a fourth set. Luckily for the Australian, he held his nerves and won the fourth set to set up a meeting against Russian Karen Khachanov.
"You guys are awesome — that’s why I usually request to play on here as long as I can, because it’s such a home feel,” Kyrgios said after the match, per the AAP and Tennis Australia. “I definitely lost my way a little bit.
He’s a tough competitor, he knows how to win matches. “I just had to refocus — I could have done to a very dark place in the fourth set but I somehow put it away. “It was a tough match, I’m just happy to get through. That would have been very interesting if it went to a fifth set."
