Daniil Medvedev won his only Grand Slam at the 2021 US Open, before Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner became the new ATP tour references.

The former world number 1 was defeated by Sinner in the 2024 Australian Open final, despite leading by two sets.

During a recent interview, Daniil Medvedev talked about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner: "The great quality of Carlos is the power of his shots. When he is fit, he hardly makes mistakes. I find it impressive that, playing against opponents like Zverev and Sinner, he is able to beat them without having to play his best tennis.

Every time I play him, I know I can’t play a slow ball or a short ball, because he’s gonna destroy me. I’ve never seen anything like it," explained Medvedev. "As for Jannik, I’d say it’s very different.

It has an exquisite ball quality, but the power of its shots is a little lower. He has found ways to make very few mistakes and is able to find winners from any position. They are two great champions, it is difficult to beat them and I believe that both will enter history.

I’m not afraid of them, I’ll try to go get them every time. I have a clear idea of who will win more Grand Slams, but I don’t want to say it yet".

The Russian went on to talk about a rather discursive subject, the format of five sets. "I think it’s very spectacular and nice to play the best five sets at the Slams, but I’d rather play three sets. It’s just my opinion and I don’t even have a valid explanation for it, I just say what I’d like. Playing 5 sets makes matches much more intense mentally and physically.

However, I think playing 5 sets is much more exhausting for the body, so you can get more injuries. I understand that for television is fine, if you have a crazy game to 5 sets is great because it will go down in history.”
