Davidson Kozlowski and Mai-Ly Tran, men's and women's head coaches at Drake University, announced that Alex Emery will be an assistant coach at both men's and women's teams in the new season. In the previous season, Alex was an assistant coach at the University of Arizona, and in 2 seasons before that, he was the volunteer assistant coach for Wake Forest, helping the Demon Deacons to reach the last 16 at the NCAA on both occasions.
In 2015, Wake Forest won 24 matches for the first time in program history, and Emery worked with Noah Rubin, who was the ITA National Rookie of the Year, ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC Player of the Year. The next season was even better, with 31 wins for Demon Deacons and the first ACC Championship title.
Training with Skander Mansouri, Alex helped him to end the season ranked 14th in singles and 9th in the doubles and to earn All-ACC honors. Emery is a former Collegiate player, competing under Kozlowski at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, so they know each other for a very long time.
Also, he spent the 2014 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bulldogs, helping them to enter Top 30 on the ITA rankings list.
"I am very excited to have Alex join us as an assistant coach. I believe his experience and knowledge for the game will help Drake tennis reach new heights," said Tran.
"We are absolutely thrilled to have Alex return and join our staff full-time.SOURCE: Emery Named Men's and Women's Tennis Assistant Coach ALSO READ: Julian Zlobinsky and Bar Botzer join Wake Forest for 2017-18 season
I have known Alex for over 10 years. He played for me while I coaching at UAB and was one the most accomplished players in UAB history. Alex was an extremely intelligent player and one of his true strengths is his ability to breakdown a player's game and tendencies.
He's definitely going to be able to get the most out of our player's talent and give them a mental edge," said Kozlowski.
