NAIA / W: Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats tops Marian Knights 8-1

Two of best teams from the Crossroads League in the previous year met at the start of the new 2017-18 season, and Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats defeated Marian Knights by 8-1 at the Sutter Tennis Center. The Wildcats were off to a flying start, winning 2 easy doubles matches and they never looked back, taking all 12 sets in singles for a commanding triumph.

Alex Mella/Lizzie Bauss opened the action on the main court, ousting Elise Betscher/Maria Sunga 8-1, followed by Olivia Reed/Thewuni Devaraja who defeated Maria Lueken/Anne Taylor 8-2 on court 2. Mary Mullaney/Emma Wood scored the only win for Marian, edging Marissa Klein/Becky Scurt 9-7 on court 3 to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Alex Mella was the best player of the tie, demolishing Maria Lueken by 6-0 6-0 on court 2, and just a few minutes later it was 4-1 when Olivia Reed took down Anne Taylor 6-0 6-1 on court 4. Thewuni Devaraja added the 5th point for the Wildcats, beating Maria Sunga 6-1 6-1 on court 3.

Lizzie Bauss was too strong for Elise Betscher on the main court, prevailing by 6-2 6-2 and in the first interesting singles set of the day, Marissa Klein earned a 6-1 7-5 win against Mary Mullaney on court 5. In the end, Laura Moore bested Alex Griebling by 6-4 6-3 on court 6 to wrap up a comprehensive triumph for Indiana Wesleyan.
