ATP set to make shocking decision in favour of Davis Cup

Interviewed by Le Parisien, the French tennis federation chief Bernard Giudicelli revealed the new updates about the possible Davis Cup new format in 2019. The plan is still to make 18 teams play at the end of the season. But now a preliminary stage featuring 24 teams was added.

12 of them will be the teams who lost before the semifinals the previous year, the other 12 will be coming from who wins final round ties of Group I. During a two-day period, these 24 teams will compete in the traditional format (home/away) in best of three-set matches (four singles and one doubles).

It should happen in early February just following the Australian Open. At the end of these two days, 12 winners will be qualified for the final stage of Novembre and the four teams (who reached semifinals) will automatically enter as well.

Two teams, through a wild card invitation, will join the field. Everything will be played in the best of three sets format (two singles, one doubles). Giudicelli explained that just 47% of top 10 players competed in 2017, and it's necessary to bring in them.

'The number of spectators is getting lower as well", he admitted. ATP is ready to give up the World Cup Team that should have joined the calendar in 2020 January, in order not to have two team competitions together. ATP Rankings points are likely to be introduced.
