World No. 281 Borna Gojo will replace Marin Cilic in the Croatian team for the Davis Cup Finals, it was announced by Croatian playing-captain Franko Skugor. The Croatian team suffered a big blow last week when 2014 US Open champion Cilic announced his withdrawal from the Davis Cup Finals due to an injury.
At first, it appeared that world No. 283 Nino Serdarusic would fill the last available spot in the Croatian team. Serdarusic, 22, even spoke about how looking forward and excited he was about getting a chance to play against a star player on the big stage.
Instead, it will be 21-year-old Gojo who will be making his Davis Cup debut as Skugor believes their chances will be better with the world No. 281. "In the morning we nominated our team and now our team features Borna Coric, Borna Gojo, Ivan Dodig, Mate Pavic and Nikola Mektic.
There was a doubt who to select between Borna Gojo and Nino Serdarusic for the second singles match and we opted for Borna because faster conditions suit him a bit better," Skugor said.
