Tiriac attacks Pique’s Davis Cup format: “It looks like a refugee camp”

Ion Tiriac, the owner of the Madrid Open, compared the new Davis Cup format, highly supported by Barcelona’s Gerard Pique, with a refugee camp because of the low number of spectators that were present in some of the ties.

“Davis Cup is a parody of a 120 years old event. It happened to me to be there (in Madrid) with Ilie Năstase and we went on Saturday to the Davis Cup, I mean World Championship, semifinal between Russia and Canada. At 17 o’clock, while the game was unfolding, there were 3000 spectators in the stages.

And at another match, I think it was Argentina with Croatia, there were 15 spectators… Davis Cup looks like a refugee camp”, said Ion Tiriac, as quoted by DigiSport. Tiriac blamed ITF president David Haggerty for the poor organization of the Davis Cup and asked for his demission.

“If he had at least a little bit of honor, the president of the international federation, the one who sold these rights and we don’t know where the money is now, should resign on spot”, Tiriac said. All of these comments were triggered by Tiriac’s disagreement with the new rules that changed one of the most traditional events in the ATP tour.

The final stage of the Davis Cup is now played at a single location and the matches transformed from best-of-5-sets to best-of-3-sets. However, Pique said that his only purpose is to make Davis Cup a better competetition. Although he means to do good, many tennis stars like Djokovic, Federer and Nadal have contested his involvement in the world of tennis.
