As every year there will be some crazy first round matches in Stuttgart, where the first important clay-court tournament of the season takes place. Only four players get a Bye in a 28-player draw, and almost all the best players are there.
The three-time champion Maria Sharapova will face the world No. 7 Caroline Garcia in the first round. The Russian leads head to head meetings 4-0. Last year Stuttgart marked Sharapova's comeback to competitive tennis for the first time since her doping ban.
The match between Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova is something incredible: on Sunday they face each other in the Fed Cup semifinal between Germany and Czech Republic just at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, and two or three days later the match will happen again on the same court.
There will be an all American clash between Sloane Stephens and Coco Vandeweghe. The first seed Simona Halep is set to meet Stephens in the quarters and Elina Svitolina in the semifinals. In the bottom half Garbine Muguruza would face Kvitova in the quarters and Jelena Ostapenko in the semis. Laura Siegemund is the defending champion.
