Australian Open Tops & Flops: Epic Nadal, Tournament saved by..

Rafael Nadal and Ashleigh Barty rewrote the history of the Australian Open, for different reasons, making the 2022 edition legendary. The Spaniard won his 21st Grand Slam, beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, Barty brought the title back to his homeland.

Men's singles Tops & Flops

Rafael Nadal. Epic, legendary, immense. A tournament that saw him face numerous difficulties even before the tournament, with COVID-19 and a precarious physical condition. The Spaniard suffers with Shapovalov and partly with Berrettin.

In the final he seemed doomed, but as always, at the first uncertainties and weaknesses of his opponent, he threw himself on him like a predator, beating him in five sets and rewriting the history of tennis. GOAT? Daniil Medvedev was the big favorite of the tournament, especially after the exclusion of number one Novak Djokovic.

The Russian does not give great security from the first races and in the quarter-finals he also cancels a match point in Auger-Aliassime, but makes a great comeback. He manages to make it to the final, but lets himself come back and wastes too many opportunities.

Nadal has achieved a great feat, but the Russian is to blame for him. Thanks to this result in the tournament Matteo Berrettini improves his Best Ranking and becomes number 6 in the world. Records are not discussed, but a further step towards glory is needed. Stefanos Tsitsipas plays a good tournament, considering that he had recovered from some physical problems but that he managed to reach the semifinals.

In the semifinal he surrenders to his hated Medvedev. Alexander Zverev, with the exclusion of Djokovic, was the top favorite and second favorite for the tournament. He comes out in the Round of 16 and without even fighting Shapovalov.

Yet another misstep in a career of incredible ups and downs: after the victories at the Olympics and at the Masters everyone believed in it but Sascha has once again disappointed.

Women's Tops & Flops

Ashleigh Barty is the first Australian to win at home in many years.

The tennis player is a mix of class and experience, she does not lose a single set in the tournament and she shows that she has something more than all her colleagues. Now for the tennis player the Grand Slam dream cannot be excluded.

Danielle Collins is one of the most beautiful surprises of the tournament, the American reaches the final and is the tennis player who has put Barty in more difficulty. Naomi Osaka looked like she might be destined to get to the bottom, but, once again, she inexplicably melted like snow in the sun.

An inexplicable psychodrama for what can be considered the true heir of Serena Williams. Simona Halep seemed set to get something more in this Grand Slam: she fails in the enterprise. One of the big disappointments of the tournament.

The tournament: saved in extremis by two victories of inexplicable importance. Rafa in the men's singles and Ash in the women's singles have rewritten history, also the victory of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis in the men's doubles.

But everything that happened before with Novak Djokovic's issue is an indelible stain, both for the tournament and for Serb world no.1: a fact that threatened to cast too many shadows on the Happy Slam. Well, but not very well.
