Maria Sharapova returned to the US Open 2017 in great shape, after a few months of rest, due to injuries. The match against Simona Halep, in the first round, showed that there is still a lot of difference between her and the others, both in terms of charisma, determination, grin, desire to win and popularity.
Despite the defeat in the fourth round against Latvian Anastasija Sevastova, the US Open remains a very positive tournament for the Russian. A tournament that certainly gave women's tennis panorama and the return of a great champion.
Now, Sharapova needs to be good at picking up from her performance in New York, and transforming it for the upcoming tournaments that will close the season. The Siberian will not play the WTA Finals in Singapore, but she will have the Asian swing in order to recover the time she lost between her 15-month ban and her injuries.
She won her last title in May 2015. More than two years ago. She will surely be hungry for wins, and she will want to overcome all the criticisms of the last year-and-a-half. And next season, with the return of Serena Williams, one of the greatest rivalries of this era will come back to life again.
Sharapova now needs to be able to recover the right athletic condition in order to support her determination and keen mental fitness. ALSO READ: Maria Sharapova: 'I've always seen myself ending my career on my terms' .
