Eugenie Bouchard and Belinda Bencic gave signs of awakening at the BGL Luxembourg Open. The two former stars of the WTA Tour experienced a very disappointing period in their careers. A lot of expectations were on them, as was pressure that the two girls were not able to handle.
The Canadian has lived a real professional nightmare. After the amazing 2014 season, there came four years of darkness. Bouchard succeeded in making people talk about herself for her behavior on her social media networks, rather than for her performances on the court.
Rather poor performances, not to say embarrassing. The climax this year; she slipped to the 194th place in the WTA ranking. Bouchard played an ITF tournament in Canada, where she was dramatically defeated in the quarter-finals by Nao Hibino.
After other horrifying results, she played in Luxembourg. Genie reached the semi-finals, showing a good level of tennis. Performances that allowed the Canadian to come within reach of the top-100 of the WTA ranking and look with confidence for the next season.
For Bencic, the speech is different. The young Swiss player, who exploded in 2015, experienced two years of technical, tactical and psychological travails. At the end of 2017, she came back to good levels, winning the WTA 125s of Hua Hin and Taipei.
In 2018, there were some ups and downs, some injuries, but also good performances, as in Wimbledon, where she was defeated in the fourth round by eventual champion Angelique Kerber and in Luxembourg, where she reached and lost the final against Julia Goerges.
Bencic also has age on her side. She just has to regain confidence in herself and in her tennis, to return to shine. The road seen in this season could be the right one. Soon, as the new season starts, we will be able to see how the two make a mark.
