Is Sloane Stephens' potential yet to be discovered?

Serena and Venus Williams have given a lot of satisfaction to American tennis. But as of today, the US have only one player who looks like she can continue their legacy: we are obviously talking about Sloane Stephens. The exploit at the US Open 2017 was not a coincidence; this statement is a fact, related to the season just ended, which saw Stephens among the champions.

The victory in Miami and the other three finals have officially projected the twenty-five year old among the stars of American tennis in 2018. But what needs to be highlighted is that, in the face of great performances and excellent results, Sloane Stephens still has great hidden potential, which has not yet fully come to light and that is yet to be discovered.

The fine tennis shown at the French Open, on a surface not really congenial to her tennis, gave further proof to this thesis. After a disappointing Australian Open (defeat in the first round against Shuai Zhang), she reached the quarters in Acapulco, the third round at Indian Wells and the victory in Miami.

On clay, the results were not good, up to Paris. Then she reached the French Open final. And, though she lost to Simona Halep, gave her further confidence. The summer season started in the worst way; defeat in the first round of Wimbledon against Donna Vekic, but continued with the final, lost once again against Halep, in Montreal.

At the US Open her race to defend the title stopped at the quarterfinals. The last highlight of a good season was the last act of the WTA Finals, lost against Elina Svitolina. Could we expect more from her? Maybe yes, but her season was positive and, above all, if she finally had to find continuity in her performances, nothing could prevent her from reaching the top of the WTA Ranking.
