All those who thought that Kevin Anderson's final at the US Open 2017 was just a coincidence due to chance and fortune, were definitely and blatantly contradicted. Yes, we can say that he was a big surprise, but only up to a certain point of view.
Two Slam finals can not be a coincidence. The South African is now a certainty, a complete player, who is difficult to beat for anyone, at the best of five sets, but also at the best of three sets. He is an indomitable warrior, who is an example for the new generation: he never gives up, even when the games seem compromised.
Just think at the Wimbledon quarters won against Roger Federer, when the score was 0-2 in favor of the Swiss. His season started in Pune, with the defeat in the final against Gilles Simon. At the Australian Open, he was immediately eliminated by the Briton Kyle Edmund, but a few days later came the revenge, in New York, where he won the fourth career title.
A few weeks later he played the third final in two months, lost against Juan Martin del Potro, in Acapulco. Anderson also played well in Indian Wells and Miami, where in both cases he reached the quarter-finals. On clay, he proved to be competitive: semi-final in Madrid and fourth round at the Franch Open.
This showed a completeness and a nearly perfect technical maturity. On grass, he made the masterpiece at Wimbledon. The quarter-finals won against Federer, the six-hour semi-final won against John Isner and the final, played with the remaining energy, which he lost to Novak Djokovic.
After the Toronto semi-final and the fourth round at the US Open, he won the fifth title of his career in Wien, against Kei Nishikori. Anderson ended the year in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals, where he was again defeated by Djokovic.
This was certainly the best season of his career. The South African, at 32, can be considered a mature player and that now is confident on all surfaces, despite his physique and his tennis are perfect on the faster surfaces.
His determination, his tenacity, his grit and his pride have grown along with his technical background and his physical shape. To date, he has become a fearsome adversary for all the top-players. ALSO READ: Ivan Ljubicic breaks silence: I see Roger Federer as a friend
