US Open women's singles preview: Osaka ready to defend the throne

All the biggest stars of the women's singles will compete in New York, in order to win the US Open 2019, the last seasonal Slam that will be played on the hard-courts of Flushing Meadows. The women's singles will be one of the most interesting tournaments in recent years, with many protagonists who can aspire to final victory.

Just think that in the first round there will be the vintage challenge between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova! The best business-card to start the tournament. Naomi Osaka will have to defend the title won last year. The seed no.

1 will not have a simple task; on her side, there are Belinda Bencic, Kiki Bertens, Aryna Sabalenka, the young Cori Gauff, Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Bianca Andreescu, Sloane Stephens, Grabine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova.

In the bottom-half here are Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Ashleigh Barty, Elina Svitolina, Dayana Yastremska, Sofia Kenin, Madison Keys, Venus Williams, Johanna Konta, Angelique Kerber and Karolina Pliskova. Considering the surface and the draw, there are some tennis players who can certainly aspire to the final victory.

These include Karolina Pliskova, Bianca Andreescu, Serena Williams, Simona Halep and Ashleigh Barty. In the chaos that reigns in the WTA Tour every tennis player can win a tournament, even a Slam, but today these are the stars that have more chances of winning, more than the others.

From a psychological and physical point of view, Halep and Pliskova could have something more than their rivals. Serena and Andreescu will have to consider their physical level (and Serena the first round against Sharapova).

Barty and Osaka will also have to consider the psychological side. Kerber, Kenin and Kvitova will have to be good to take advantage of any gift from their most uncomfortable opponents; if they should do it, then they will have a little chance.

I see no chance for Muguruza, Svitolina, Stephens, Venus Williams and Wozniacki, and few for Kiki Bertens. Johanna Konta, Madison Keys and Qiang Wang could be the tournament's outsiders, on a surface on which they are expressing good tennis.
